During initial gameplay, wood and stone are top priorities. Later in the game, iron and gold become critical resources as the need to build and upgrade buildings declines.
Lord of Ultima - Resource Types
There are five resources in Lord of Ultima (LOU), Having plenty of each resource assures that the city will not be limited in what can be built due to a lack of supplies. The five resources are wood, stone, iron, food, and gold. Wood and Stone are used for constructing and upgrading buildings as well as recruiting higher level troops. Gold and Iron are used primarily for recruitment of troops.
Methods of Acquiring Resources in Lord of Ultima
There are four methods of acquiring resources in this online game. The first and most used is for the city to produce its own resources for consumption. Other methods include plundering another city and stealing their resources, purchasing them through a built in trade system, and getting them from special items which can be obtained as a result of completing quests, raiding monsters, or purchasing them with diamonds.
Understanding Resource Production in LOU
When constructing buildings for resources, it is important to understand the factors that effect total production. Production of any resource type, except gold, is affected by the items in the eight squares surrounding it. Bonuses, in the form of a percentage increase in the production of the specific resource, can be generated through building resource buildings near natural resource supplies, specialty buildings, or through nearby cottages, which increase labor availability for the resource.
Resource bonuses from natural resources provide a small bonus to production of 25%. These bonuses are cumulative. If a wood cutter's hut is built next to four squares of wood, the production increases by 100%. When first starting out, this may be significant. In later stages of the game, it can actually be beneficial to demolish some of the resources and build other bonus buildings.
Cottages provide a bonus to resource production which varies depending on their level. Bonuses from cottages are also cumulative, so if there are three cottages near an item, it will get the cottage bonus once for each cottage.
Specialty Buildings in LOU
For each resource, there is one specialty building that provides a significant increase in production. For wood, there are sawmills. For stone, there are stonemasons, iron has a foundry, farms have mills, and gold has marketplaces. The bonus for a level 10 building in this category is 75%. These buildings are unique in that the bonus is not cumulative - building two mills next to a farm does not provide any additional bonus.
Resource Production Strategy in Lord of Ultima
There are many different strategies and opinions on what the best layout for resources is. For information on specific building layouts, read through the LOU forums or join an alliance in the game, and ask other players. Many alliances provide graphic demonstrations of the best layouts. Some even provide applications to assist in planning the layout for an entire city.
